Fear of corona virus is once again emerging all over the globe. Following Singapore and Hong Kong, new cases have emerged in other states in India. Experts claim that the virus this time is different and highly infectious compared to the earlier version. The new mutated type of virus is named JN.1, which has its origin in the BA.2.86 subvariant of Omicron. JN.1 was initially discovered in August last year, and ever since it has been spreading gradually.
The JN.1 strain contains approximately 30 genetic mutations in its make, which enables it to bypass the natural immunity of the human body. Because of this, it can rapidly spread the disease, though not with a huge mortality rate as yet. However, everyone ranging from the global health community to the health officials in India have been put on alert about this strain.
Even though the corona scenario in India is presently under control, the infected population has been found on the rise in certain states. Up to May 19, 2024, a total of 257 active corona cases have been found in the nation. Even though it is not so high, the infection rate is spreading alarmingly in states such as Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Two patient deaths at KEM Hospital in Mumbai have caused eyebrows to be raised in the health department. The deceased were one elderly person and one who had a chronic illness for years, hospital sources say.
Another fact is also troubling - this time not just adults, but some newborns have also contracted this strain. Even though the infection has yet to become serious in children, physicians indicate that this virus can be perilous for anyone with a compromised immune system. The aged and patients with comorbidities are particularly vulnerable.
Now, the question is, how effective is the earlier vaccine against this new strain? Research has indicated that antibodies generated due to earlier infection or vaccination are not much effective against JN.1. Yet, as per the World Health Organization (WHO), a booster dose with XBB.1.5 can boost the immunity of the body by 19% to 49%. So, it is increasingly becoming very essential for individuals who are already in poor health to go for a booster.
The people are being alerted by the government and physicians. They have been advised to wear masks, wash their hands frequently, quarantine themselves if they have an illness, and stay away from large gatherings unnecessarily. In addition, physicians opine that mask-wearing and vaccination are now obligatory for the elderly and the ill.
Celebrities are not excluded either in this case. Bollywood actress Shilpa Shirodkar just declared on social media that she is now infected with Covid and under isolation. She has also asked everyone to take care and adhere to Covid protocols.
Overall, even though JN.1 is not yet highly lethal, its infective capacity is very high. Thus, everyone should be cautious and adhere to the rules of hygiene so that the second wave of infection can be avoided at the earliest.
