Kolkata, 5 July 2025:
All four of the arrested suspects were present when Kolkata Police reconstructed the crime scene on Friday, marking a significant advancement in the South Calcutta Law College gang rape case.
The nearly four hour long exercise was conducted at dawn and is regarded as an essential component of the current investigation being conducted by the Detective Department of the city police. At approximately 4.30 a.m. on July 4, the three main suspects, former contractual employee and alumnus Monojit Mishra, as well as current students Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed, were taken to the campus with security officer Pinaki Banerjee. During the reconstruction, a significant police presence was placed on the property to ensure security and prevent any disruptions.
The goal of the reconstruction, according to a senior police officer, was to confirm the survivor's account by comparing her timeline and account of what happened with the accused's positions, movements, and statements. Early this morning, the four defendants were brought to South Calcutta Law College. The work was finished without incident. The officer told PTI, "Our findings will now be cross checked with the woman's allegation and verified with other evidence." The 24 year old survivor, a first year student, had filed a complaint alleging that on the evening of June 25, Mishra gang raped her with the help of Ahmed and Mukherjee.
She claimed that the attack occurred at several different locations on campus, including the guard's quarters, and lasted for more than three hours. Banerjee, the security guard, has been charged with aiding and abetting the crime by permitting the criminals entry and neglecting his responsibilities. Thus far, the survivor's complaint has been supported by the medical report and circumstantial evidence, such as CCTV footage and her physical injuries.
It is anticipated that the reconstruction will shed more light on each accused person's responsibilities and assist in establishing whether any other people were involved or knew about the incident beforehand. Since his police custody ended on July 4, Pinaki Banerjee was supposed to appear in court later on Friday. Until July 8th, the other three defendants are still being held.
Now that the crime scene has been recreated, investigators are getting ready to write a thorough report that will be delivered to the court in the next few days.
