A startling case of corruption surfaced in the Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, where some deceased individuals were represented as active workers under the MGNREGA scheme. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is to give employment to rural citizens. But here, dead persons' names were being utilized to withdraw government funds illegally.
As per reports, the names of few dead villagers were still present in official documents as workers employed on MGNREGA schemes. Salaries were also accounted for being paid to them, though they had passed away. In few instances, the relatives of the deceased did not even know that their dead kin's names were being used fraudulently.
The scam was unearthed after a couple of villagers pointed out questions regarding the job cards and payment vouchers. One local social activist lodged a complaint, which necessitated an initial probe. On discovering irregularities, the district administration directed a complete investigation.
The officials have now started verifying job cards, attendance registers, and bank accounts against the scheme. The authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against them. Government employees or local officers found guilty will be legally prosecuted and suspended.
District Magistrate Manish Bansal said, "We have seriously noted this matter. Nobody will be spared. The culprits will be punished."
This is not the first instance of such a case in India. In many regions of the country, MGNREGA has been abused by way of fake attendance, ghost workers, and false reporting. Experts opine that improved monitoring and utilization of technology such as Aadhaar and real-time tracking can prevent such frauds.
The people of the village of Sambhal are now calling for an proper probe and return of the embezzled money. The episode has again raised concerns regarding the transparency and integrity of rural development schemes.
