On Saturday, 19 July 2025, police arrested five suspects in Kolkata’s New Town during a joint operation by the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and West Bengal STF, in connection with the killing of gangster Chandan Mishra inside a private hospital in Patna .
Mishra, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, was undergoing treatment on medical parole at Paras Hospital on Thursday, 17 July. CCTV footage revealed five armed men entering his ICU room on the second floor and opening fire, fleeing the scene within 30 seconds.
According to a senior officer cited by PTI, “Of the five, four were directly involved in the killing. Whether the fifth accused was involved in the crime or he only helped the others to hide is being probed.” The suspects fled Patna immediately after the crime and were traced to a residential complex in New Town via mobile‑tower data, leading to their early‑morning arrest.
Authorities say the operation was launched following detailed intelligence gathering. “They fled Patna after the incident and came to Kolkata,” confirmed a police officer, adding, “Their mobile phone tower location helped us track them. The Bihar Police will produce them before a local court, seeking transit remand.”
Investigations have identified one of the shooters as Tauseef Badshah from Phulwarisharif in Patna, who led the group . Others believed to be involved include Monu Singh and Balwant Singh from Buxar; all five suspects are now in custody in Bengal, undergoing interrogation by the STF.
Chandan Mishra’s killing has revived attention on deep‑rooted gang rivalries. Law enforcement sources suggest the act was ordered from Purulia jail by rival gangster Sheru Singh, currently serving a life term. Sheru and Mishra, former allies in crime, reportedly fell out over control of land and criminal enterprises.
The murder has triggered fresh concerns over hospital security and enforcement gaps. Officials acknowledge serious lapses in screening and surveillance at the facility. One report noted: “Five unmasked assailants shot and killed [Mishra] inside Paras HMRI Hospital… The attackers successfully bypassed frisking and security checks, avoiding lifts and using paths that were not adequately monitored.”
Chandan Mishra, aged 36, had over 24 criminal cases registered against him, including the 2011 murder of businessman Rajendra Keshri. He was on a 15‑day parole for liver surgery when the attack occurred, with his release scheduled for 18 July.
The FIR was filed by Mishra’s father, Mantoo Mishra, and hospital authorities at Shastrinagar police station. Following the arrests, police in both states will expedite transit remand procedures to ensure the suspects appear before a Patna court, while forensic and mobile‑forensic teams continue to gather evidence.
