Gambhir Receives Death Threat, Delhi Police Launch Probe

Delhi Police have launched an investigation into alleged death threats received by Indian cricket head coach Gautam Gambhir from an entity identifying as "ISIS Kashmir." Gambhir, a former BJP MP, reported receiving two emails on April 22—the day of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 tourists—with the message "IKillU" and the sender’s name as "ISIS Kashmir." He filed a formal complaint at Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar Police Station, urging authorities to register an FIR and ensure his family’s safety.

The cyber cell is following the email's trail, but no FIR has been lodged yet. DCP Central Delhi M Harsha Vardhan verified Gambhir is already a Delhi Police protectee, security increased after threat.

This is the second time such a threat was made against Gambhir, who had previously faced such harassment in November 2021 when he was in Parliament.

The threats come at a time of increased security anxiety following the Pahalgam attack, which was attributed to the Resistance Front (a breakaway faction of Lashkar-e-Taiba). Gambhir had deplored the attack on social media, promising retaliation: "Those who carried out the attack will pay. India will strike". His vocal opposition to terrorism and political identity as a BJP representative have rendered him a frequent target for threats, which the authorities blame on attempts at intimidation.

The probe is ongoing and Delhi Police is cooperating with central agencies to verify the credibility of the threat.

Although no direct connection has been found between the attackers in Pahalgam and India, the timing highlights the precarious security environment prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir and its spillover effects on high-profile targets.
