Binoy Viswam, a Kerala-based Rajya Sabha member of the Communist Party of India (CPI), raised concerns about the "eleventh Report of the Committee of Parliament on Official Languages" in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra. He claimed that the report gave Hindi an excessive amount of weight to make it the dominant language in India.
In his letter to PM Modi, Viswam stated, “I write to boost my strongest objection towards the ‘eleventh Report of the Committee of Parliament on Official Languages’ that provides undue prominence to Hindi with a purpose to make it India’s dominant language. As a nation of several languages, the imposition of Hindi to the exclusion of others is deeply offensive and threatens the significance of the 21 different official languages recognised within the eighth schedule of the Structure.”
“In mild of the above, I strongly urge you to withdraw this report and search for a broader session on this delicate topic earlier than any such coverage choice is made. India is a land of several cultures with every citizen’s mom tongue representing part of their identification, to impose a secondary standing on an individual’s mom tongue will all the time be met with robust opposition and trigger issues for India’s unity,” he added.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan voiced his concerns to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the escalating language conflict and said that such recommendations are harmful to the unity and diversity of the nation amid the ongoing debate over making Hindi a required language in important Indian educational institutions.
