India will conduct a nation-wide civil defence simulation exercise on May 7, 2025, in 259 cities and towns, including the national capital city Delhi and financial capital Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. It is the first ever national level exercise since 1971 and has been performed as tensions intensified with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack.
The drill will test the readiness of civilian defense systems and inform the civilian population on how to act during times of crisis such as air raids or enemy invasion. Air-raid warning signals will be employed to signal alerts, and blackout drills will be conducted where individuals will be asked to switch off lights so that enemy planes cannot detect them.
The drill will also include sanitation and trench and bunker preparation, mock evacuation drill, and checking of communication lines between civil defense units and the Indian Air Force.
The participants will include volunteers, home guards, National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), district controllers, civil defence wardens, and students from schools and colleges. Alternative centers and control centers will be experimented with in terms of their ability to deal with emergencies.
The drill aims at improving coordination between various agencies as well as civilian awareness on protection during attacks. Despite the exercise, daily normal services like banks will be operating and open as usual.
This massive exercise conveys a very strong message of India's intention and determination to meet new and emerging security threats, especially on border-aware regions of states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, and the Northeast. It is designed to increase national preparedness and strength in meeting potential emergencies.
