New Delhi, May 31 2025: In a major boost to its locomotive fleet, Indian Railways is all set to acquire 300 new high-horsepower diesel locomotives from US-based manufacturer Wabtec Corporation by the financial year 2028.

The move is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise its infrastructure and enhance freight and passenger movement across non-electrified routes. These advanced locomotives are expected to significantly improve operational efficiency and haulage capacity, especially in regions where electrification is yet to be completed.

According to the officials, locomotives will be built with cutting-edge technology and are designed to meet both environmental and performance standards. The partnership with Wabtec reflects India’s commitment to incorporating global expertise in strengthening its rail network.

The delivery will take place in phases over the next few years, with the full order expected to be completed by FY2027-28.

This development marks another step forward in Indian Railways’ modernisation drive, which includes upgrades in rolling stock, station redevelopment, and the introduction of semi-high-speed and high-speed trains.
