LANDSLIDE IN GAURIKUND, UTTARAKHAND CLAIMS 3 LIVES, 20 MISSING

Heavy Rains Trigger Landslide in Gaurikund, Uttarakhand

A landslide in Gaurikund, Uttarakhand, India, on the night of August 3, 2023, has claimed the lives of three people and left 20 others missing. The landslide was triggered by heavy rains, and it buried two roadside shops and a dhaba (eatery) before falling into the strong currents of the Mandakini river below.


The three people who were killed have been identified as Nepali nationals Tek Bahadur Kami, Prakash Kami, and Devi Kami. The 20 people who are missing include four locals and 16 people of Nepalese origin.Rescue operations are ongoing, but the chances of finding the missing alive are slim. The search is being hampered by bad weather and the dangerous terrain.


The Gaurikund landslide is a tragic reminder of the dangers of landslides in the Himalayas. This region is prone to landslides, and heavy rains can make the situation even more dangerous.The authorities have urged people to stay away from the landslide-prone areas in the Himalayas. They have also warned people to be careful when travelling in these areas during the monsoon season.


The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are leading the search operation. The Indian Air Force has also been deployed to help with the rescue efforts.The weather conditions have improved slightly, which has helped the rescue teams. The authorities have set up a control room in Rudraprayag to coordinate the rescue efforts.


The landslide occurred at around 11:00 PM on August 3 and was triggered by heavy rains. It not only buried two roadside shops and a dhaba, but it also fell into the strong currents of the Mandakini river below.. Three people were killed in the landslide.
