A man was left critically injured after being shot outside Chhatarpur Metro Station in South Delhi on Thursday afternoon. The victim, who is Arun Lohia, was ambushed by two men on a motorcycle while he was sitting inside his SUV near CDR Chowk in the Mehrauli area.
The attack occurred at 1 PM, and the police say they fired approximately 10 rounds of bullets at Arun. The attackers made a swift getaway after shooting repeatedly. Passersby who overheard the gunshots rushed to his aid and called the police. Arun was taken to the nearest hospital, where his condition is reported to be critical.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the attack could have occurred because of an ancient grudge.Both the victim and the alleged attackers are said to belong to the same village and had previously had conflicts. Police officers add that they are investigating whether this was a premeditated attack because of personal rivalry.
The place has been cordoned off by the police and they are scanning CCTV footage of adjacent buildings to trace the assailants. Various teams have been assigned to locate the suspects. As yet, there have been no arrests, but the inquiry is still underway.
Commenting on the case, a senior police officer remarked, "We are taking this incident very seriously. The accused will be caught soon. We are working on all angles."
This incident has created new worries regarding public safety around public areas**, particularly metro stations through which huge volumes of people pass daily. Local residents and regular commuters in the Chhatarpur area have demanded increased police patrolling so that such offenses are not repeated in the future.
The police are appealing to everyone who saw the attack or has some information to step forward and assist in the investigation. Arun's family is meanwhile praying for his recovery and calling for strict action to be taken against the attackers.
