Manipur has witnessed violent ethnic clashes since May 3 in which over 160 people have lost their lives.

This session will be held to discuss all the issues of violence.

This will be first session of Manipur assembly to be held amidst the ongoing ethnic clashes among the people of Meitie and kuki communities.

This Significant Move in which Manipur Cabinet Urges Governor for Assembly Session on August 21st will lead to the development of society and peace among people of Manipur.

In a major development, the Manipur cabinet has recommended that the governor summon the next session of the state assembly on August 21. This move comes amidst escalating tensions and demands from various civil society organizations to address the ongoing crisis in the state.

According to an official release by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, the State Cabinet has formally recommended the summoning of the 4th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on the aforementioned date. This decision aims to provide an opportunity for lawmakers to discuss and find solutions to the pressing issues affecting the state.

The recent clashes between the dominant Meitei community and the tribal Kukis have further intensified the urgency for a special assembly session. The conflict initially began on May 3 during a protest against a high court order that proposed scheduled tribe (ST) status for the Meiteis. The violence quickly spread throughout the state, highlighting the deep-rooted ethnic fault lines and resulting in the displacement of tens of thousands of residents. Many people have been forced to flee their burning homes and neighborhoods, often crossing state borders in search of safety. Tragically, at least 150 lives have been lost in the violence so far.

The demand for an assembly session stems from the need to address these critical issues that have not only caused loss of life but have also severely impacted the social fabric of Manipur. By convening the session, lawmakers hope to facilitate meaningful discussions that will lead to the formulation of effective strategies and policies to restore peace and stability in the region.
