New Delhi [India], March 25
Congress MP Manish Tewari has put forward an Adjournment Motion in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, asking to pause the regular activities of the House to talk about serious issues concerning alleged problems in the higher judiciary.
In his notice, Tewari stressed the need to discuss this important national issue. He mentioned that the four main pillars of India's democracy are the executive, legislature, judiciary, and a free press. According to Tewari, the reported issues in the judiciary have caused worry among legal professionals and citizens throughout the nation.
"The recent news about possible problems in the judiciary has unsettled both the legal community and the public. As the highest legislative body that oversees both the executive and an independent judiciary, Parliament must take action," Tewari said in his motion.
He urged the government to give a detailed statement in the House about the incidents, as they have raised questions about the integrity, fairness, and impartiality of the judicial system.
Tewari requested the Chair's permission to address this matter urgently, emphasizing its significance in maintaining the public's trust in India's judicial processes.
Meanwhile, on Monday, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha experienced adjournments as the treasury benches aimed to challenge Congress over comments made by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar regarding the Constitution, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Health Minister JP Nadda leading the BJP's response.
In response, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh filed a breach of privilege notice against Rijiju in the Rajya Sabha.
Ruckus had erupted in Rajya Sabha on Monday over Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's remarks with BJP leaders alleging that he had talked of "changing the Constitution".
