New Delhi: Parliament began on a dramatic note Monday as the Monsoon Session started with intense exchanges. The ruling party praised the success of Operation Sindoor, while the Opposition raised various issues, causing a stir in both Houses. Amid the chaos and loud slogans, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day.
Parliament will reconvene on Tuesday morning. On Monday, the Rajya Sabha passed the Bills of Lading Bill, 2025. This bill effectively repeals the 169-year-old Indian Bills of Lading Act, 1856. The new law aims to update shipping rules and improve India's maritime sector's global competitiveness. With its passage, the Bills of Lading Bill, 2024 will become the Bills of Lading Act, 2025. Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha was adjourned due to the raucous chanting from Opposition members.
A total of 145 Lok Sabha members and 63 Opposition MPs from the Rajya Sabha have submitted a memorandum seeking the removal of Justice Yashwant Verma under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution. The Lok Sabha resumed at 2 PM but was adjourned again within minutes until 4 PM amid ongoing slogans from the Opposition. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha continued its proceedings.
The Monsoon Session will have 21 sittings over 32 days, scheduled to end on August 21. Both Houses will break on August 12 and will resume on August 18, following the Independence Day celebrations.
Seven pending Bills are set for discussion and approval during the Monsoon Session, and eight new Bills are expected to be introduced, considered, and passed. Some key pieces of legislation include the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which will replace an existing ordinance. Other significant Bills are the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025; the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025; the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025; and the Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance) Bill, 2025. These proposed laws cover a variety of areas, including taxation, education, sports, mining, and heritage preservation, and are expected to spark considerable debate in the House.
The Opposition has called for the Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and Home Minister to be present during next week’s discussion on Operation Sindoor.
