Muharram Chaos in Ujjain Injures Five Cops

The procession of Muharram in Ujjain became riotous after one of the ceremonial horses rode around the police barricades injuring five police officers which required the police to retaliate with a lathi charge to ensure any further chaos is stopped.


The accident took place at Khajurwadi Mosque where thousands of people were involved in the symbolical parade. Ujjain Police Superintendent Pradeep Sharma stated that the route of the procession was finalised beforehand with participants strictly told not to deviate. Anyhow an organiser tried to come over the barricades and head off the procession the wrong way and the horse was sent deliberately into the police barricades so as to get through them.


According to a video published on social media, a huge crowd of people ran toward it, and the horse forced his way. The barricades fell and few officers fell into them. An eyewitness said, they had to employ batons to contain situation.

As a result of the violation, the police lodged a First Information Report against 16 people including procession organisers on the charges of rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing government servants inm the execution of duty.


The leaders of the community of Ujjain had been informed previously to follow a specific path strictly. But some members attempted to ram the symbolic horse, or burraq, into restricted premises, the tension later became intense.
