NEW DELHI:
In the run-up to Independence Day celebrations, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Tuesday organised a grand ‘Tiranga Yatra’, drawing the participation of around 5,000 students from its Atal Adarsh and Navyug schools. The event formed part of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, aimed at encouraging citizens to display the national flag and foster a sense of patriotism.
The march began from Janpath Radial Circle in Connaught Place and saw the entire inner circle awash in the colours of the national flag. Students carried the Tricolour as they walked together, their voices raised in patriotic songs and slogans, creating an atmosphere charged with enthusiasm and national pride.
An official statement from NDMC described the event as a significant public engagement effort to spread awareness about the importance of the national flag and to involve young citizens in commemorating India’s independence. The statement highlighted the council’s intent to instil civic values and a sense of national unity through participatory programmes.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Minister Parvesh Verma, NDMC chairman Keshav Chandra, vice-chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, council members Anil Valmiki and Dinesh Partap Singh, along with senior NDMC officials. Their presence underscored the importance the civic body attaches to public participation in national events.
Speaking at the gathering, NDMC chairman Keshav Chandra commended the students for their spirited involvement. “Our young generation is the torchbearer of India’s future. Their active participation in such events not only honours our freedom fighters but also strengthens our collective resolve to uphold the values of our democracy,” he said.
Minister Parvesh Verma, addressing the crowd, emphasised that such initiatives connect citizens, especially children, with the country’s rich history and cultural heritage. He noted that the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign was more than a symbolic gesture, calling it “a movement to remind every citizen of the sacrifices that have brought us freedom and the responsibilities that come with it.”
The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign encourages people across India to hoist the national flag at their homes during the Independence Day period, turning neighbourhoods into vibrant displays of unity and pride. The NDMC’s ‘Tiranga Yatra’ served as a visible demonstration of this campaign’s spirit, attracting the attention of passers-by and visitors in Connaught Place.
For the students, many of whom were participating in such a large-scale public event for the first time, the day offered both celebration and reflection. Teachers accompanying the groups remarked on the excitement among the children and the learning opportunities such events present beyond the classroom.
As the march concluded, the atmosphere in Connaught Place remained buoyant, with the colours of the Tricolour fluttering in the breeze and patriotic songs lingering in the air. Through the ‘Tiranga Yatra’, NDMC succeeded in combining civic engagement with national celebration, sending a strong message of unity ahead of the country’s 78th Independence Day.
