Over 100 MPs Back Impeachment Motion Against Justice Yashwant Varma Amid Cash Row: Rijiju

New Delhi, July 20 — Several Members of Parliament have taken the initiative to bring an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma in Parliament. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that over 100 MPs have already signed the motion. This decision was taken after serious allegations of misconduct surfaced against Justice Varma. The controversy erupted following a fire incident in a government quarter in Delhi in March, where a large amount of cash was recovered. That incident triggered growing concerns, eventually leading to the move for impeachment.

According to Rijiju, “This is not just a move by the government—MPs from all parties have jointly agreed to it. Everything will be done according to constitutional and parliamentary procedures.” He further mentioned that MPs are prepared to bring the motion during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. As per parliamentary rules, such a motion requires the support of at least 100 MPs in the Lok Sabha or 50 in the Rajya Sabha. Rijiju confirmed that the required numbers have been achieved.

On the other hand, Justice Yashwant Varma has already filed a petition in the Supreme Court, declaring his innocence and challenging the legality of the impeachment proceedings. He claims that he was not given a fair opportunity to defend himself during the investigation process.

In light of these developments, Parliament is expected to heat up considerably. The opposition Congress party has also become active on the issue, with several of its MPs supporting the impeachment motion. According to political analysts, although impeachment of a judge is rare, this move strengthens the demand for transparency and accountability in the judiciary.

As the Monsoon Session begins, it is clear that the impeachment motion against the judge has emerged as a central topic of debate. What remains to be seen is how the government and the opposition navigate this in Parliament, and what the final outcome will be for Justice Varma.
