PM Modi Holds Crisis Meet with Armed Forces Chiefs Amid India-Pakistan Escalation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened an emergency high-level security session on May 9, 2025, with the heads of all three military forces-Army, Navy, and Air Force-as well as Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The talks were precipitated by escalating India-Pakistan tensions after India's retaliatory Operation Sindoor, which involved missile attacks against terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after the lethal April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

The meeting was to evaluate the strategy and progress of Operation Sindoor and discuss the overall security situation as Pakistan escalated cross-border hostilities. These comprised small arms and artillery exchanges along the Line of Control in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, repeated airspace violations, and drone intrusions against Indian military infrastructure. Indian forces intercepted hundreds of drones-successfully identified as Turkish-made Asisguard Songar models-with kinetic and non-kinetic means.

The meeting also saw an option to broaden the role of the Navy in the current war, whereas until now the Army and Air Force have been prominently involved.

PM Modi has also authorized the Army Chief to mobilize the Territorial Army and requested the states to empower civil defense authorities with emergency procurement powers in order to have faster responses to changing threats.

This series of consultations highlights the seriousness of the ongoing security crisis, with India adopting a stance of preparedness to retaliate proportionally to any Pakistani aggression.

The government continues to work closely with military commanders to protect national security while coping with diplomatic and internal challenges caused by the conflict.
