New Delhi: A day after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday wished him “good health” and recognized his long contributions to the nation in various roles.

“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has had many chances to serve our country in different positions, including as Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” the Prime Minister wrote in a post on X.

Dhankhar, 74, submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Monday, citing health concerns. The President accepted his resignation, which took effect immediately. In his letter, Dhankhar said he was stepping down “to prioritize health care and abide by medical advice.”

His resignation came on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. In the Rajya Sabha, where he had presided as Chairperson since August 2022, Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Singh took over proceedings on Tuesday morning. Following opposition-led disruptions, the Upper House was adjourned till 2 PM.

Dhankhar’s term was set to run until 2027. In his resignation letter to President Murmu, he wrote, “To prioritize health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”

He also expressed his heartfelt thanks to President Murmu, stating, “I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency, the Hon’ble President of India, for her unwavering support and the wonderful working relationship we maintained during my time.”

Additionally, Dhankhar thanked the Prime Minister and the Union Cabinet, saying, “The Prime Minister's cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned a lot during my time in office.”
