Hundreds of Indian travellers are cancelling plans to visit Turkey and Azerbaijan following their support for Pakistan in its conflict with India. Over 50% of bookings to these countries combined have been cancelled in just six days amid mounting boycott calls and the suspension of tour packages by travel operators, according to industry executives.
This will cause severe dent especially to Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan received about 2.6 million foreign tourists in 2024, of which around 250,000 were Indians. The average spending by an Indian tourist was 2,170 Azerbaijani Manat (AZN), which is approximately $1,276, leading to a total Indian contribution of roughly $308.6 million.
Turkey welcomed 3.3 lakh Indian visitors, up 20.7% from 2023, while Azerbaijan had a remarkable increase of 108%, attracting 2.43 lakh Indian tourists. Last year, Turkey reported an average spend of $972 (Rs 82,922) per visitor.
