7th June, 2025:
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, has made grave accusations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying that the Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2024 were rigged to benefit the Mahayuti alliance, which is led by the BJP.
Gandhi detailed what he called a calculated plan to undermine the democratic process in a scathingly worded opinion piece titled Match Fixing Maharashtra, which was published on June 6. Inflating voter turnout figures, manipulating the committee that chooses the Election Commission, adding fraudulent voters to the electoral register, abusing administrative power, and using the media and financial resources to sway public opinion are the five main stages of the alleged interference in the election process, according to Gandhi.
"Our elections' integrity is in jeopardy. About the approaching elections in the eastern state, Gandhi cautioned that "what we saw in Maharashtra could be repeated in Bihar." BJP leaders responded by rejecting the allegations as politically motivated and without merit. Gandhi was charged by Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP's information technology cell, with trying to undermine public trust in democratic institutions. About the billionaire philanthropist who has frequently been the object of right-wing criticism, Malviya said, "These claims are straight out of the George Soros playbook."
The Congress leader was also criticized by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who claimed that the Congress always plays the victim when it loses. This is an obvious attempt to undermine the people's democratic mandate. In a statement, the Indian Election Commission denied the charges and reaffirmed its dedication to holding free and fair elections. Gandhi and his supporters, however, have cited what they describe as concerning irregularities in the voter list, asserting that an abnormally large number of voters were added in the brief time leading up to the Maharashtra elections.
According to political analysts, Gandhi's comments may have been intended to incite opposition forces ahead of the elections in Bihar and establish the Congress as a guardian of democratic integrity. The accusations have heightened an already tense political environment, as tensions have increased and both sides are adamant about their positions.
