The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court is scheduled to hear the Centre's clarification on Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship status today, May 5, 2025.
The court has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to provide a clear and explicit response on whether Rahul Gandhi holds Indian citizenship amid allegations that he possesses dual citizenship with the United Kingdom, which would disqualify him from being a Lok Sabha member.
The case has been brought on the grounds outlined by ex-Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy and others in favor of UK company records where the nationality of Gandhi was reported as British.
The court had previously condemned the MHA's first status report, which skirted the issue of citizenship of Gandhi rather than coming straight to it. According to these grounds, the government was asked to file a new report within 10 days from the time when fact verification duration was extended by the UK government.
The upcoming hearing is expected to bring more clarity on this contentious issue involving the eligibility of a prominent opposition leader, with both the Centre and petitioners preparing their arguments.
The matter has attracted significant political and legal attention given its implications for Gandhi’s parliamentary membership and Indian citizenship laws.
