Rajasthan is baked by a heatwave, and Jaisalmer reaches the highest temperature in India at 48°C.

A severe heatwave has swept across western India, with Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, recording the nation's highest maximum temperature on Thursday at a scorching 48.0°C (118.4°F), which is 5.5°C above normal. Other cities in Rajasthan also experienced extreme heat, including Barmer at 47.5°C (+5.2°C), Bikaner at 46.4°C (+4.0°C), and Pilani at 45.7°C (nearly 5°C above normal). "Warm night" conditions exacerbated the health risks by offering minimal nocturnal relief.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Rajasthan, indicating moderate health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups like infants, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions. An orange alert was also issued for areas facing higher health risks. Public advisories urged people to avoid heat exposure, wear light clothing, cover their heads, and stay well-hydrated with ORS solutions and homemade drinks like lemon water and buttermilk.

This heatwave is attributed to a persistent high-pressure system and delayed pre-monsoon activity, conditions increasingly common due to climate change. The IMD forecasts a further temperature rise of 2–4°C across Northwest India over the next two days, with heatwave conditions expected to persist for at least five days. The department is actively disseminating safety guidelines and district-wise warnings through social media and its Heatwave Guidance Portal as public health officials remain on high alert.
