Requests for visas to Turkey and Azerbaijan from India are down 42%.

Recent geopolitical tensions have significantly impacted Indian outbound travel, evidenced by a 42% drop in visa applications to Turkey and Azerbaijan. This decline, reported by the visa processing platform Atlys, directly followed public expressions of support for Pakistan by both nations, triggering an immediate backlash from Indian travelers.

Within 36 hours of the controversial statements, Atlys observed a 60% increase in users abandoning their visa applications mid-process, indicating a growing tendency among Indian travelers to make politically informed travel decisions. Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys, noted that this shift was instinctive, driven by readily available information and alternative travel options. In response to the national sentiment, Atlys ceased all marketing efforts related to Turkey and Azerbaijan.

The boycott underscores how geopolitical stances can directly influence consumer behavior, particularly in the digital age where real-time information facilitates rapid reactions and alternative travel planning. Regional data revealed varying responses: major metropolitan areas like Delhi and Mumbai experienced a sharper 53% decline in Turkey-bound visa applications, whereas tier-2 cities such as Indore and Jaipur saw a less pronounced drop of around 20%. These figures highlight both a nationalistic reaction and an evolving trend in travel decisions that extends beyond mere leisure preferences.
