Railway Minister Condemns Shooting, Orders High-Level Investigation

A Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable shot and killed four passengers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Express train on Monday, July 30, 2023. The incident took place at around 11:59 PM IST in Kolkata, India.The constable, identified as Suresh Yadav, was reportedly on duty when he got into an argument with a group of passengers.The argument escalated, and Yadav pulled out his service revolver and opened fire. Four passengers were killed, and two others were injured.


Yadav was arrested immediately after the incident. He has been accused of murder and attempted murder.The motive for the shooting is still unclear. However, police believe that Yadav may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.


The incident has caused widespread shock and outrage in India. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has condemned the shooting and ordered a high-level investigation.The shooting is a reminder of the dangers of gun violence in India. The train was en route from Jaipur to Mumbai.The shooting took place in the coach S-6 of the train.The victims were all male, and they ranged in age from 20 to 35 years old.Yadav has been suspended from the RPF.He is being held in police custody.The investigation into the incident is ongoing.


In a statement, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the tragic incident on the Jaipur-Mumbai Express train. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. I have ordered a high-level investigation into the matter and strict action will be taken against those responsible."


The shooting has also raised concerns about the safety of passengers on Indian trains. In recent years, there have been a number of violent incidents on trains, including murders, rapes, and robberies.The government has said that it is taking steps to improve security on trains, but more needs to be done.
