Six sanitation workers were killed and five others critically injured early Saturday morning when a speeding pickup van ran them over along Ibrahimbas village on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, in the Ferozpur Jhirka police station area.
The injured workers were taken to a local hospital, where they are in a serious condition.
The gruesome accident happened at about 10 am when a team of 11 garbage collectors were out on cleaning work along the expressway. A speeding pickup vehicle veered suddenly into the group, running over them with huge force. Six of the workers were run over to death instantly.
Locals immediately called the authorities and assisted in conveying the wounded to the hospital to receive urgent attention. In minutes, ambulances, highway safety units, and police materialized on the scene. A huge throng also arrived at the location, causing a brief traffic jam.
A top police official reported that the identification process of the deceased is in progress. Preliminary reports indicate that five of the deceased were residents of Kheri Kalan village and one was from Jhimrawat village.
The pickup truck driver fled the scene after the accident. Police launched a manhunt to catch the accused and registered a case against him legally.
Inspector Aman Singh, Station House Officer, Ferozpur Jhirka police station added, "We are monitoring the CCTV footage and gathering other evidence in order to ascertain the precise circumstances of the accident. The injured are receiving medical treatment, and a detailed investigation is being conducted from all conceivable angles."
