The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) arrested two people from Delhi airport on Tuesday for smuggling gold. The gold, weighing around 810 grams, was recovered from the rectum of one of the passengers, who was identified as Ranjeet Singh. The other person, Khalid Maksud, was arrested for receiving the smuggled gold.
The CISF said that the incident was a major success in its efforts to curb gold smuggling at the Delhi airport. The force has been conducting regular checks of passengers and their luggage to prevent the smuggling of gold and other precious metals.
The maximum punishment for gold smuggling in India is seven years imprisonment. However, the actual punishment depends on the quantity of gold smuggled and the circumstances of the case.
In the case of Ranjeet Singh and Khalid Maksud, the quantity of gold smuggled was relatively small, so they are likely to face a lesser punishment. However, they could still be sentenced to imprisonment for up to seven years.
The CISF has also warned other smugglers that they will be caught and punished if they try to smuggle gold into India. The force has stepped up its security measures at all airports in the country to prevent gold smuggling.
The gold was found hidden in three egg-shaped capsules that were wrapped in a black adhesive tap and the capsules were inserted into the passenger's rectum by a doctor who was paid for his services.The passenger was intercepted by the CISF after he arrived at the Delhi airport from Sharjah and the visitor, who was waiting to receive the smuggled gold, was also arrested by the CISF.
The CISF said that the incident was a clear indication that gold smugglers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to smuggle gold into India. The force has appealed to passengers to cooperate with the security checks at airports and to report any suspicious activity to the CISF.
