Lakhs of devotees had gathered at the Sangam of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati to take a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya. This is one of the most auspicious bathing days of Mahakumbh Mela and lakhs of pilgrims from across the country had come to take a dip.

Due to the huge crowd, chaos ensued and a near stampede like situation arose. Eyewitnesses said that the sudden rush of devotees created panic and many were struggling to maintain balance. Security personnel on duty intervened and managed the situation to prevent any casualty.

After the incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to CM Yogi Adityanath to take stock of the situation. He assured the CM that Centre would provide all help to control the crowd and Mela.

Local authorities, police and disaster response teams have been deployed to manage the movement of pilgrims and prevent any further mishap. Administration has asked devotees to remain calm and follow safety norms.

Mahakumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gathering in the world and millions of pilgrims come to seek spiritual purification. Given the scale of the event, crowd management is a big challenge despite all the security arrangements.

Situation is being monitored to prevent any such incident again and all attendees of the Mela are safe.

Meanwhile, CM has asked devotees to take a dip at their nearest ghat and not to go to Sangam Nose, follow the administration’s instructions and cooperate with them. He has also asked not to believe in any rumour.

Those injured in the stampede at Mahakumbh are being taken to the hospital set up in Sector 2 of Mela area.
