Kolkata, May 22 2025:The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, directed two schoolteachers to visit the Bidhannagar (North) police station and identify individuals who allegedly incited violence during a protest outside the state education headquarters, Bikash Bhavan, on May 15.

The two petitioners, Indrajit Mondal and Sudip Konar, had moved court seeking protection from police action. While granting temporary relief, the court instructed them to name those, who are were responsible for attacking law enforcement personnel and damaging property.

No coercive action is to be taken against them until further orders, the court said.

The teachers were among thousands protesting job terminations based on a Supreme Court ruling that declared the 2016 school recruitment process flawed. Protesters reportedly locked the gates of the premises, trapping over 3,000 employees, including 900 women, for several hours.

Justice Tirthankar Ghosh acknowledged the teachers’ grievances but emphasised the significance of lawful protest.

He said “Attacking public servants cannot be justified,” thereby suggesting that they relocate their protest to Central Park.
