New Delhi:
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday strongly defended her brother Rahul Gandhi following the Supreme Court’s recent observations over his past remarks concerning Chinese occupation of Indian territory. The court had earlier questioned Gandhi’s statements during his 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra, particularly relating to national security and the Indian Army.
Addressing reporters in New Delhi, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her disappointment with the Supreme Court’s comments and asserted that Rahul Gandhi had never disrespected the Indian armed forces.
“With due respect to the honourable judges of the Supreme Court, they do not decide who a true Indian is,” she said. “It is the duty of the opposition leader to question the government. My brother would never speak against the Army. He holds them in the highest respect. This is a misinterpretation.”
The Supreme Court made the comments during a hearing on Monday, August 4, when it stayed Rahul Gandhi's ongoing criminal case in a Lucknow court. The case started with a complaint about Gandhi's remarks at the December 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra, in which he allegedly claimed that China had occupied Indian territory.
In addition to providing temporary relief, the Supreme Court raised concerns about Gandhi's remarks' content and tone, implying that they might have political overtones that relate to national security issues. The bench did clarify, though, that it was attempting to comprehend the wider ramifications of such public statements rather than rendering a judgment on freedom of speech.
In response to this, Congress MP KC Venugopal echoed Priyanka Gandhi’s concerns. “What Rahul Gandhi is discussing is the thinking of every nationalist Indian,” he said. “Whenever we ask questions inside the Parliament, there is no answer. Whenever we ask something related to national interest outside Parliament, we are termed anti-national. Who will give the definition of a ‘true Indian’? We are the true Indians who are raising questions for India.”
The Congress party has stood by its leader, stating that raising questions about border security and government transparency is not only a democratic right but also a duty of a responsible opposition.
Rahul Gandhi is temporarily relieved by the Supreme Court's decision to halt the proceedings, but the political ramifications persist, particularly in the tense atmosphere leading up to the next state elections. Congress leaders insist that Gandhi's comments were not about the military but rather about the central government's purported inaction and silence regarding Chinese incursions.
Although a final decision has not yet been rendered, legal experts point out that the court's decision to halt proceedings raises the possibility of a review of the case's merits.
The legal limits of political speech in democratic discourse and whether Rahul Gandhi's remarks are protected political expression are anticipated to be the main topics of the case's upcoming hearing.
