Today is 16 June. World Refill Day is an annual global campaign that takes place on June 16th. It's a day of action focused on reducing plastic pollution and promoting refill and reuse systems. The campaign encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to adopt sustainable practices and move away from single-use plastics.
It is matter of great pride for us as country as India has banned manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of several identified single-use plastic items, effective July 1, 2022. This ban, detailed in the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, targets items with low utility and high littering potential. The ban also restricts the use of plastic carry bags with a thickness below 120 microns.
We as citizens of this great country need to discard plastic in every way. Plastic pollution is threat to entire world.
But, our country still needs to take many steps to end plastic pollution in a Decisive manner .
A study published in Nature has revealed that India has become the world’s largest contributor to plastic pollution, accounting for nearly 20% of the total global plastic waste. With 9.3 million tonnes of plastic waste generated annually, India's contribution to this environmental catastrophe is larger than that of entire regions.
Of this staggering figure, 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste are mismanaged and leak into the environment each year, significantly exceeding other major polluters such as Nigeria (3.5 mt), Indonesia (3.4 mt), and China (2.8 mt).
We need to take pledge to end plastic pollution in India .
