Father of Kargil War hero Capt Vikram Batra, GL Batra, paid tribute to the youth and saints on the occasion of 76th Republic Day.

"Our brave martyrs sacrificed their lives for freedom, yet we see many foreign attacks on our freedom and unity. Many infiltration attempts were made by Pakistan and terrorism continued even after the war in Kargil. The youth sacrificed to maintain the integrity, independence and unity of our country," GL Batra told media.

"Our saints also kept our country united, independent and cultured," he added.

Recalling his son's sacrifice in Kargil war, he said, "I am the father of Captain Vikram Batra... I am proud that such a great soul was born in my house."

As India is celebrating its 76th Republic Day today, people across the country are in high spirits, getting into the patriotic mood. Cultural songs are playing in the air and people are wearing clothes of the flag colours, symbolising unity and pride of the nation.

The mood is festive as the whole country is coming together to celebrate its democratic values and the Constitution.

Earlier in the day, PM Narendra Modi wished the nation on 76th Republic Day.

"Happy Republic Day. Today, we celebrate 75 glorious years of being a republic. We bow to all the great women and men who made our Constitution and ensured that our journey is rooted in democracy, dignity and unity. May this occasion strengthen our efforts towards preserving the ideals of our Constitution and working towards a stronger and prosperous India," PM Modi tweeted.

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu hoisted the national flag at Kartavya Path today, followed by national anthem with 21 gun salute using 105-mm Light Field Guns, an indigenous weapon system.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is the chief guest this year.

This year Republic Day is celebrating 75 years of Constitution and theme is "Jan Bhagidari" (people's participation).

PM Narendra Modi laid a wreath at National War Memorial at India Gate and paid tribute to the brave hearts who laid down their lives for the country. Then President Murmu hoisted the national flag, assisted by Indian Navy officers Lieutenant Shubham Kumar and Lieutenant Yogita Saini.
