Brian Lara, who was 56 years old in 2025, is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricket batsmen, with a career characterized by record-breaking innings and elegant strokeplay. He holds world records for highest individual scores in first-class and Test cricket. In 1994, he scored 501 not out for Warwickshire v. Durham, the only 500-plus score in first-class cricket. He also regained the Test record twice: first 375 versus England in 1994, then a 400 not out in 2004, and thus became the only player to twice shatter the record for the highest Test score.

Lara scored 11,953 runs in 131 Tests at a rate of 52.88 and with 34 centuries and 48 half-centuries. The West Indies' record run-scorer and one of the world's greatest century-makers, he has played perhaps his best cricket in One-Day Internationals. Lara scored 10,405 runs in 299 ODIs with 19 centuries, demonstrating his aptness for all three versions of the game. The captain's highest individual Test score of 400* is also the overall highest.

Awards and recognitions include being only the second player after Donald Bradman to have two triple-centuries in Tests, the only player with two 350-plus Test scores, and the first to have seven centuries in eight first-class matches. Lara recorded nine double-centuries in Tests, something that has been achieved only by Bradman and Kumar Sangakkara. Lara's match-winning score of 277 against Australia in Sydney in 1993 won West Indies the series and gave his daughter the name Sydney.

As captain, Lara led West Indies to victory in their first ICC Champions Trophy in 2004.

Lara was known for his lavish runs under pressure and is also the record holder for most runs (351) in a losing Test side. Lara also scored the most runs in one over in Test cricket (28 runs), a record that stood until 2022.

Lara retired from international cricket following the 2007 World Cup, leaving behind a legacy of records, grace, and determination that still inspires cricketers worldwide.
