Football Village: Barauni in Begusarai changed history

"The colour of football, the company of Begusarai"—this is not just a slogan, it is a reflection of a silent revolution that began with broken legs and bruised pride in a neglected corner of Bihar. Far from the hustle and bustle of Patna, football did not just enter—it fought and won in a simple area of Barauni in Begusarai district.

This ground, where a library was once built in the name of freedom fighter Jamuna Bhagat, later became the home of football. But when the inexperienced local girls lost to the experienced Muzaffarpur team in an exhibition match to mark the 50th anniversary of the ground in 1990—that was when a new chapter began. From the pain of that defeat, the football revolution was born.

Chandra Shekhar, a retired schoolteacher and former footballer, says, "We were humiliated, but we turned that pain into strength."  The entire village came together to form a girls' football team, hire a coach and with limited funds, a historic journey began.

The next year, they returned with courage, to compete. They defeated a strong team like Ara, where former India striker Poonam played, 1-0. This victory became more than just a scoreline, but a declaration of confidence.

Over the next three decades, Barauni became a hotbed of football talent. A new culture was built on the sacrifices and love of people like Chandra Shekhar and former Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Sanjeev Kumar Singh. Sanjeev says, "I am nothing to my family, but football is my love. Someone or the other had to take responsibility."

In 2018, this ground in Barauni hosted the Santosh Trophy match, and in 2025, the Khelo India Youth Games will be held here. Begusarai, a 12-time state champion, now supplies 70 percent of the players for the Bihar team.

For Barauni, Khelo India is not just a tournament—it is a recognition of their sacrifice, courage, and culture. The village that started with defeat is now writing history.
