One Continent, One Team! India ‘Qualifies’ for Los Angeles Olympic Cricket, Pakistan Left Out?

According to the latest plans of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), India’s participation in the men’s T20 cricket tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is almost certain, while Pakistan and New Zealand are facing a strong possibility of missing out. After more than a century, cricket is finally returning to the Olympic stage, and its comeback has already sparked excitement and widespread discussion across the cricketing world. The qualification process proposed for Olympic cricket has also triggered debate.

Under this new system, the qualification will follow the continental model used for other Olympic sports. The United States, as the host nation, will automatically qualify. The remaining slots will go to the highest-ranked team from each continent, and one final spot will be filled by the winner of a global qualifier. This means that only one team from each region can qualify directly. Under these rules, India is almost guaranteed to secure the Asian spot, as they currently hold the top position in the ICC T20 rankings.

However, this system puts strong teams like Pakistan at risk. Despite being ranked seventh in T20 cricket, Pakistan may not make it to the Olympics because India occupies the sole Asian berth. A similar scenario threatens New Zealand, as only Australia can qualify directly from Oceania, leaving the Kiwis likely excluded from the Olympic stage despite their consistent performances in world cricket.

The 2028 Olympic cricket tournament will feature separate six-team T20 events for both men and women, with each squad comprising a maximum of 15 players. Organizers have indicated that while Los Angeles will serve as the main venue, some matches could be held in Pomona or even New York to cater to Indian prime-time audiences and maximize broadcast revenue.

Having only six teams in an Olympic cricket competition is creating a new dynamic in world cricket. Experts believe that the continental qualification rule could lead to major controversies if top-tier teams are left out. Still, India’s secure qualification highlights its dominance in T20 cricket, and the 2028 Olympics is set to be a historic moment for Indian cricket fans.
