Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement from Test Cricket, Marks End of an Era

India skipper Rohit Sharma made his sudden retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025. He posted the news on Instagram, stating it was a privilege to play for India in the longest format and expressing gratitude to fans for their support throughout the years. Rohit confirmed that he will keep playing and captaining India in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

The decision was made while reports indicated that the BCCI selectors had planned to drop him as Test captain before the forthcoming England tour based on his lackluster recent performance in red-ball cricket. Rohit found himself struggling with the bat in the past few series, such as a challenging tour of Australia where he managed just 6.20 runs on average. He had also removed himself from the playing XI for the third Test in Sydney based on his performance.

Rohit concluded his Test career with 4,301 runs in 67 games, with 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, at an average of 40.57. He took India to the World Test Championship final and led the team in a number of key series. India will have to name a new Test captain with his retirement, with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant under consideration.

Rohit's retirement signals the end of an era in Indian Test cricket, but he is still a key player and leader in limited-overs cricket.
