Rohit Sharma's biography and his name placed in respect at Wankhede Stadium

From now onwards, whosoever glances towards the gallery of Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium will be able to notice a romantic name - "Rohit Sharma Stand". The ground on which he used to fantasize, now his name is etched in history on that ground. This tribute to the 'Hitman' of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma, is not only a stand, it is a proud indication of the realization of the dream of a poor middle-class boy. His innings on the cricket pitch, his captainship, his planning - is a flawless endorsement of all.

The sentimental value of this award bestowed upon Rohit Sharma by the Mumbai Cricket Association in his life can be realized by observing the tears in his eyes, the tears of his wife. When Rohit was on the stage speaking about his childhood, his wife Ritika and parents were with him. And Ritika's eyes were brimming with tears of happiness. This honour is not just a testimony of becoming a successful cricketer, but also a child, a husband and a citizen of India. Going back to Rohit's own words, it is known how he used to travel by train as a child.

When the train passed by the Wankhede Stadium, he would peek out the window and catch a glimpse of the stadium. For him, those moments were akin to feeling a dream. Today, the stand that bears his name stands right next to that train line. This turning point in life teaches us that if dreams do come true, then history can be written this way. When he entered the Wankhede Stadium for the first time at the age of 15, there was practice going on for the Ranji Trophy. Observers the great cricketers of the Mumbai team noticed him practicing there, imagining himself to be among them. Little did anyone know that the young teenager would eventually make a niche for himself in the cricket history of not just Mumbai, but of the whole nation.

Rohit's childhood was tough. The family was not wealthy. Taking care of cricket expenses was not easy for them. But yet, the family trusted his dream, which has been true today.

He began his cricket career at the domestic level. Then he debuted in the Indian team in 2007 and won the T20 World Cup that year, which was his debut stage.

And after that, the success followed back to back. Three double centuries as the sole batsman in ODI cricket, highest innings of 264 runs, five IPL titles, continuous success in limited-overs cricket - all of them, Rohit Sharma has etched his name in the history books. He has also established himself as an opener in Test cricket, which many initially questioned.

But one of the most significant chapters in his life was leadership.

When Rohit became captain of the Indian team after Mahendra Singh Dhoni, nobody thought that he would be so successful. But his composed, steady and strategic leadership rebuilt the Indian team. India performed exceptionally under his captaincy in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Though the World Cup was lost in the final game, his cricketing intelligence, bravery and self-assurance still earned a position in the hearts of the whole countrymen. Dignitaries like Sharad Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis attended the award ceremony.

Everybody knew that this moment is not only a cricketing victory, but a human life struggle. Rohit was unable to hold his feelings back in that speech. Memories of the past moved him. He added, "It is a wonderful feeling. Which cannot be described. I still recall, I would go by train just to view this stadium even once. Now my name will be inscribed on that stand—this is above a dream." At that moment, Ritika's tears and beaming smile were a language more transparent than a thousand words. How a family can become one of the agents of success in an individual's life, that was visible on the faces of Rohit's parents standing beside him. Today's award is not only a sheer pride of Rohit, but it is also a source of motivation for the youth who fantasized about millions of people in the country.

For all those who still catch glimpses of the stadium gallery through the train window, those who still swing the bat on the dirt patch, those who aspire to become a cricketer from a small room—for all of them, this chapter of Rohit Sharma's life is a beaming testimony that dreams do get fulfilled, if there is self-belief, grit and faith.

Rohit asserted that he hasn't quit yet. He wants to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup. There is Asia Cup, there is T20 World Cup. His passion, sense of duty and attachment with cricket are still unshaken. But this stand, this glory will be in his heart forever. "Rohit Sharma Stand" isn't a name, it's a symbol of a singular determination, a belief, and above all—a dream, which one day started from the window of the train.
