Former England captain Michael Vaughan has suggested that Virat Kohli should be appointed India's Test captain for the tour of England and Shubman Gill can be his deputy. Vaughan has made this comment at a time when Rohit Sharma has declared his retirement from Test cricket on an official note.
Since the announcement, there has been speculation that the BCCI is in search of a new captain and Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are at the top of the list. In the meanwhile, there have been different reports stating that Virat Kohli has also hinted at retiring from Test cricket to the BCCI.
Michael Vaughan tweeted on X (X), "If I were India, I would have Virat as captain and Shubman Gill as his vice-captain for the England tour."
Interestingly, Virat Kohli was the Indian Test captain earlier and was replaced by Rohit Sharma in 2022. In India's history during Kohli's captaincy, 40 out of 68 Tests have been won with a win percentage of 58.82%.
Kohli is also among the leading batsmen in Test cricket. He has represented India in 123 Test matches and accumulated 9,230 runs with an average of 46.9 and a top score of 254*. He has 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries to his credit.
Kohli was last observed playing for India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, where he made no impact in five Tests and was criticized for his inability to bowl outside the off-stump. But his recent performance in the IPL indicates that he is ready for the next World Test Championship cycle.
