Thiruvananthapuram: The Vice-President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, addressed the International Conference on “Libraries Empowering Communities - Global Perspectives” through a video message, describing libraries as “temples of learning” that foster knowledge, inclusion and empowerment.
The two-day conference, organised by the P. N. Panicker Foundation at Kanakakkunnu Palace, marks the 80th year of Kerala’s organised library movement. It celebrates the vision of Shri P. N. Panicker, revered as the pioneer of India’s library and literacy movement.
In his address, the Vice-President commended the Foundation for its consistent efforts in promoting reading, digital literacy and community development. He lauded its motto, Vayichu Valaruka (Read and Grow), saying it continues to guide society towards enlightenment and progress.
Highlighting India’s long-standing tradition of learning, Shri Radhakrishnan said, “Bharat has been a land of knowledge since time immemorial. From the Epics to modern libraries, our civilisation has always celebrated the pursuit of wisdom.” He added that libraries embody India’s eternal ethos of learning and serve as vital spaces for intellectual and social growth.
Reflecting on the digital era, the Vice-President said that libraries have become trusted guides in an age of information overload and misinformation. “While technology provides easy access to data, libraries cultivate reflection, critical thinking and meaningful dialogue,” he observed. He urged that libraries must play a stronger role in promoting digital literacy and media awareness among citizens.
Shri Radhakrishnan also praised Kerala’s exemplary record in education and literacy, noting that the state’s library movement has transformed communities by making knowledge accessible to all. He paid tribute to Shri P. N. Panicker for turning libraries into vibrant centres of learning and social inclusion.
Concluding his message, the Vice-President called for strengthening the network of public and community libraries across the country. “Libraries are dynamic spaces of learning, inclusion and innovation. By empowering people through knowledge, we empower the nation,” he said.
