Parenting Tips: Water is vital for our bodies. It not only quenches thirst but also helps flush out toxins. But when it comes to young children, many parents are confused about how much water they should give their child throughout the day.
Pediatrician Tarun Anand answered this question in his Instagram video. He explained that children of all ages have different water needs. In this context, let's explore how much water children should drink or parents should provide, depending on their age.
Up to 6 months
Pediatricians say that children under this age don't need separate water. If the child drinks only breast milk, they get enough hydration. Formula-fed babies also generally don't need water, but in very hot weather, small amounts can be given after consulting a doctor.
6 to 12 months
When the child starts eating solid food, they should be introduced to water. Initially, it's best to give 2 to 4 ounces (about half a cup) of water daily. It's best to give water in a sippy cup rather than a bottle so your child can learn to drink on their own.
1 to 3 Years
Children this age are more active in sports, so their bodies need adequate water. Therefore, 4 to 6 cups of water should be given throughout the day. Try to give your child frequent small amounts of water, especially while playing or with meals.
Now, as your child becomes more active, 5 to 6 cups of water should be given daily. This amount can be slightly increased during the summer or when playing outside.
Keep these things in mind.
Pediatricians say that every child's needs are different. If your child sweats a lot, lives in hot weather, or is sick, increase the amount of water slightly. Also, be sure not to give your child too much water at once; give it in small amounts throughout the day.
Water is as important to children's health as proper food. Providing them with the right amount of water, appropriate for their age, keeps them healthy, active, and happy. So, from now on, pay extra attention to your child's hydration needs to keep them healthy and energetic.
