Child rights body summons Twitter official for not filing report on Kunal Kamra’s parody video post

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has summoned Twitter India's communications director for failing to file a report on the action taken against comedian Kunal Kamra for posting a parody video on the platform

The Twitter executive has been summoned to testify in front of the Commission on Wednesday.

The child rights organisation had demanded Twitter to erase the video of a boy singing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 5.

Kamra had used the footage to "advance his own political ambitions," according to the report.

When a child saw Prime Minister Modi at an event in Germany in the first week of May, he sang a patriotic song called Hey Janmabhoomi Bharat.

Kamra's tweet included a video that had been altered to overlay the song withMehengayi daayan khaaye jaat hain, a song from the film Peepli Live about price inflation.

The video has been removed from Kamra's Twitter account.

"Keep the poor boy out of your dirty politics and try to focus on your bad jokes," the child's father tweeted in response to Kamra.

The child rights organisation summoned the Twitter employee on May 13, stating that the report had not been filed

Priyank Kannongo, the Chairperson ofthe National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, stated that if Twitter wants to function in India, it must follow the law.

"Twitter is yet to submit an action taken report with us after 15 days," Kannongo told The Indian Express.

"They haven't even let us know if the video has been taken down."

This isn't a unique incident with Twitter; it happens frequently."

NCPCR was founded by a former BJP youth leader.

The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights is an independent statutory agency established in 2007 to ensure the successful implementation of India's child protection laws.

It is specifically responsible with investigating children's rights.

Kanoongo, the organization's chairperson, is a former member of the Bharatiya Janata Party's youth wing.

In 2015, he left the Hindutva movement to join the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights.

He was appointed chairperson of the body in 2018.

The Commission has taken up cases on the basis of complaints from Hindutva organisations and reports on propaganda websites on numerous occasions.
